Samsung unveils SPH-P9000 successor

Samsung has a brand new UMPC that is guaranteed to knock your socks off - this successor to the SPH-P9000 will come with the ability to hook up to wireless Internet and VoIP courtesy of Mobile WiMax. Features include a spiffy looking folding QWERTY keyboard, a 30GB hard drive (why not remove that and throw in a 64GB SSD instead), and a 5" touchscreen display. Windows XP remains the operating system of choice in favor of Vista. Guess you'll have to fork out a small fortune for this if you want one.

Systemax Assault ruggedized notebook

Systemax Manufacturing has announced the Assault Ruggedized notebook that boasts a magnesium alloy case in an anti-shock design, complete with a spill resistant keyboard and touchpad that makes it one hardy notebook to tote around. It is powered by an Intel Core Duo processor with an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator and can hold up to 4GB of RAM. A 14" XGA Active Matrix Display , stereo speakers, a trio of USB 2.0 ports, and an 160GB SATA hard drive rounds off the list of features. European Treo 750 gets WM6 update

Users of BlackBerry Connect would have to hold off this upgrade process though since it is now compatible with Windows Mobile 6 at point of publishing. HP iPAQ rx5965 gets golf GPS software

HP has released the iPAQ rx5965 PDA that comes bundled with golf GPS navigation software from G-Core to cater to the golf-mad Koreans. This software was specially designed for those who are new to the greens with a 'My Caddy' function to help them get started. Other than log your own score, the iPAQ rx5965 works just like any other PDA. You will have to dig deep for this though, as the iPAQ rx5965 retails for $530 with the included software. Pretty pricey considering how pure PDAs are virtually non-existent these days, golf GPS navigation software or not.

BlackBerry 8820 arrives in Spain

Orange of Spain is blessed as they have just received the WiFi-enabled BlackBerry 8820, bringing this quad-band GSM coverage, EDGE connectivity, and integrated GPS navigation to the Spanish armada. The Spanish version differs, however, by coming with UMA support out of the box for use with Orange's Spanish UMA network. This shows that the BlackBerry 8820 is most probably compatible with T-Mobile's @Home service as well. Guess this is one where the Europeans have gone one up on us...I will keep you updated in case there is breaking news of the 8820 making its way Stateside in the near future.

HTC P3600i now comes with WM6

Folks in Australia will benefit from HTC's move to include Windows Mobile 6 into the P3600, and this updated model will be known as the P3600i instead. The upgraded operating system isn't the only thing that has changed, as the P3600i also received a speed boost with a 500MHz Samsung processor and double the ROM (256MB). Other features include Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity, a 2 megapixel camera, and quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE, UMTS/HSDPA. It will retail for approximately $840 without any subscription - pretty pricey if you ask me.

Emgeton Mini One - Windows Powered iPhone Clone

We've received a note saying that this Mini One anti-iPhone was coming out at the end of this year. The most notable point is that it has a 720x480 display, which is quite amazing for a 3.3 inch size. Emgeton (a Czech company) claims that this phone is powerful enough to record (and compress) video at 30 frames per second. Finally, it is powered by Windows Mobile 6, which makes me ask: since when does Windows Mobile look so sexy !? This doesn't look like Windows Mobile. Interesting fact: the display shows Asian characters, hinting at a possible first release in Asia.

Sony Ericsson P3i leak

The advent of the Internet has led to easier image and information leaks, and the Sony Ericsson P3i is the latest in a long list. Details regarding the specifications are still scant, although we do know that this will be the big brother of the recently released P1i. Features include touchscreen capability, but anything else is pure speculation at this point in time. Chances are it will come with WiFi and 3G (possibly even HSDPA) as well as a 3 megapixel camera (hopefully with a Carl Zeiss lens). When will it be released? Nobody knows just yet, and with the P1i being recently released, you can bet the P3i won't be out anytime soon as Sony Ericsson would want to concentrate on pushing the former.

Sophia Mobile launches NANI PDA phone

Sophia Mobile has recently unveiled the NANI PDA phone that runs on Windows CE 6.0 in Japan. This Japan-only communications device not only comes with a 4.3" widescreen WVGA display, it also features WiFi connectivity and accepts a W-SIM wireless card for a true mobile office. The display is huge enough to enjoy your favorite movies on-the-go as the NANI supports a wide variety of multimedia formats such as MPEG, DivX, XviD, WAV, WMA, MP3, and Ogg Vorbis. Other features include an Office Viewer, GPS navigation, a microSD memory card slot, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a miniUSB port. Sounds pretty complete to me - I wonder what the battery life is like.

Bluebird PIDION BM-500 launched

If you're living in Korea and are currently looking out for a PDA phone to purchase, the PIDION BM-500 from Bluebird could fit the bill perfectly. Features are pretty impressve, ranging from the 2.8" QVGA TFT LCD display, a 1.3 megapixel camera, WiFi connectivity (up to 802.11g only), Bluetooth connectivity, and T-DMB support for portable TV viewing. With 512MB ROM, you won't have problem storing programs, while a miniSD memory card slot (up to 2GB) works great for you to carry your favorite audio and video files. My only gripe would be the operating system of choice - the BM-500 is still running on Windows Mobile 5.0 Phone Edition instead of moving on towards Windows Mobile 6. Pricing details are currently unknown.

The upcoming HTC Iris is said to reside in the mid-range spectrum of things, but it will feature some advanced specifications in a simple yet functional package. Also known as the S640, the HTC Iris comes with a 2.4" LCD display (no touchscreen here folks), built-in WiFi connectivity, an integrated GPS receiver, a 2 megapixel camera, and a miniUSB connection. As with other upcoming HTC smartphones, it would be no surprise if the Iris does run on Windows Mobile 6. There is no word on a release date, but word on the street has it that the Iris will hit CDMA-based networks by the end of 2007.

Rumor: Low-cost Treo phone for $99

The word on the street is that the Palm Centro will be released on October 14th at the price of $99 (expect it to be free with a service contract). The phone should be available via Sprint only and I can only assume that Sprint paid in part for the development of the Centro in exchange for a temporary exclusive deal.

Centro is the product name for a prototype codenamed Gryphon – a curious name for a low-end product. The rumor started when the site PhoneNews supposedly got its hand on a Sprint roadmap.

Logitech Alto Cordless Notebook Stand

Logitech is expanding its Alto line of notebook stands with the addition of the Wireless Alto. The purpose of the stand is quite obvious: it doesn't take an ergonomics expert to realize that notebooks aren't built to be worked on for extended periods of time. The typical notebook user posture strains the back, the neck and the wrists.

The Alto stand is designed to solve this, by allowing a more elevated display position and connection to a real keyboard and mouse. While the previous Alto stand had a built-in keyboard, this one has a cordless one. This is not technologically ground-breaking, but unlike its competitors, this stand is well designed and can fold into a neat package for transportation.

Word on the street has it that T-Mobile USA will be receiving the BlackBerry 8300 Curve when September 24 rolls around. BoyGenius Report even has a scanned image of the handset's advertisement, and from what we can tell the Curve will feature WiFi connectivity and UMA. This modded version of the Curve will be known as the 8320, but what's more important are the added functionalities that will definitely sit down well with the business community. No word on pricing though, so just sit tight until the later part of September for more details.

Ionic cooling for computers

Water-cooled systems have been around for quite some time already, but fans are still the main method of keeping your computer running cool at all times. Ionic cooling is one of the methods developed, being 250% more effective courtesy of the "wind engine" that was developed by researchers over at Purdue University. Using a wee bit of voltage running through it, this engine generates positively charged ions that spread out toward a negatively charged wire, where the ions slice across the chip to keep airflow clean and constant. The only problem would be miniaturizing such an engine before being made available to the masses. Apparently it could take as long as three years before this cooling technology drops into consumers' hands.

Envision Peripherals has just launched the Vista-certified V-Cam that aims to bring high quality imaging and an enhanced video messaging experience to the masses. It is equipped with a 1.3 megapixel CMOS image sensor and lays claim to boast quality imaging even in the presence of a low light room. You can also use the V-Cam to capture stills in 4 megapixel glory. This webcam hooks up via an USB 2.0 interface and is capable of recording video at 30fps, featuring automatic exposure, white balance, and color correction. Gateway now in Technicolor

The 14.1" T series and 15.4" M series can now be purchased in three colors, complete with Gateway's classic configuration options that offers a wide range of choices to the consumer. Optional extras include HDMI connectivity, a biometric fingerprint reader, 802.11n WiFi, and a dedicated video card - of course, adding all those will definitely have an impact in the final price. Wireless data at 15Gbps

If you though that 802.11n connectivity is fast, think again. Researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology have managed to conjure a solution that transfers data wirelessly at a whopping 15Gbps. Now that's certainly speedy enough to transfer high definition media in a flash, but unfortunately its Achilles Heel lies in the transmission distance of a mere 100cm. Guess such technology works great for close proximity connections only, unless they could work at it to reach WiFi-class ranges. An interesting and practical solution would be hooking up your satellite cable box or console to a HDTV sans wires. I wonder how much Microsoft and Sony would charge for such an adapter if this is ever made a possibility.

Koreans are the beneficiary of yet another electronic dictionary, and this time it comes in the form of the Prime AP450. It looks like a mini notebook at first glance (when not in scale), and the swiveling display definitely adds a touch of sophistication. Available in two colors (red and blue), the Prime AP450 boasts a 4.6" touchscreen :LCD display with backlight and dual search function support. No word on pricing, but I guess tourists to Korea who want to get about on their own had better pick up one of these over there so that they will be better prepared to mingle with the locals.

PDA gets tough too little, too late

The PDA was the in thing in the last decade as executives ditched their leather-bound notebooks for something more high tech. Unfortunately, smartphones and BlackBerries have since made the PDA irrelevant and confined it to niche usage. The Recon 200X from Tripod Data Systems is nothing but a plain ol' PDA, but boy is it one tough nut to crack. It runs on Windows Mobile 5 and boasts military standard specifications that make it able to withstand drops, vibrations, and extreme temperatures without missing a beat. Sounds pretty good to have, but unfortunately it costs $2,000 to carry one around. You could probably use this in lieu of a hammer when eating crabs though.

WiFi on BlackBerry is official

Looks like Research In Motion (RIM) certainly wasn't kidding around when they came up with a WiFi version of the BlackBerry 8820 smartphone which is RIM's slimmest handset to date. It features a full and highly tactile QWERTY keyboard, a large 320 x 240 display, a trackball navigation system, integrated GPS, a microSDHC memory card slot (up to 32GB in capacity) which is backwards compatible with microSD cards, and 802.11a/b/g connectivity to let you surf within the confines of a hotspot. This quad-band GSM/GPRS and EDGE-enabled smartphone will be available later this summer from AT&T and from selected wireless carriers worldwide at a yet undisclosed price. Yet another WiFi device on the cards to keep you connected wherever you go.
